Also depending on your state laws, you may be able to get a policy anyway if you operate a corporation instead of doing it sole-proprietor. Your health person should know for sure.

How easy is it to get individual health insurance through AARP?
Only folks who work for AARP would be able to answer this because they are a completely captive insurance agency forget who underwrites the coverage. Actually, never mind, because they are captive, they wouldn't have a true feel for underwriting with other companies.
