is AARP a senior citizen advocate or a 3 party insurance broker?

To me there are a insignificant group who has gained power by misrepresentation. Nice word for lieing. To prove just how insignificant I think they are I have cancelled my membership. I had been considering it for sometime but with their unqualified support, in opposition to the vast majority of their members, of the Obama Health Care initiative, they went over the wall.

GOOD BYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE

Resolved Question: What life insurance is best for a senior 62 female, on a fixed income, AARP or Landmark Life? asap?

I get so mad when folks just scream buy term, when they don't take into account what you've said. Unless your mom (whom I presume is the 62 yr old) has some major medical condition, then I'd, personally, say neither of the ones you mentioned. Instead, I'd have you look at an Index Universal Life (why? because it's a permanent policy, can't be taken away as you age so long as the premiums are kept up, etc.). I looked at one carrier just for an example. By blending the policy so it's cheaper for her yet gives her $100,000 of coverage; coverage which doesn't go away in ten years, and figuring her at standard health, non-smoking, we have premiums of c.$110 per month I figured her paying for 20 years and then her not putting in another penny. Structured this way, the policy would run until age 120. (THIS IS NOT a solicitation for business, I just wanted you to have some idea of what I've spoken about.)

There is more out there than guaranteed life and/or term. Most families, I've found, prefer that the insurance actually is in force when a loved one dies. Most term isn't - simply because it often gets to ridiculously expensive rates and most can't afford to renew it - even if the company allows for renewal at the age the person is. Many term policies won't even renew after 85 or 90, no matter what you offer to pay.

PLEASE! see a good, licensed agent in your area. I'd suggest finding a broker, i.e., one who's not locked into any one company's products. There are many good companies out there (even lots of those with captive agents) but it's also nice to be able to shop around.

I'd suggest you ask them if they can explore either a UL, IUL (indexed universal life) or potentially even a VUL (Variable universal life) product for your mom. BTW _ I also looked at a ten year $100K term policy for her - that would be about $61/month. Great. Then when you come back when she's 72, the price jumps to $190/month for the next ten year. See? That's why I suggest you look into a permanent policy for her now. You don't even want to know what happens at 82. (they refuse coverage entirely in this company)

My Father (91) Has AARP Supplemental Insurance -- What Percentage of his Nursing Home Costs Will It …

It is dependant on the coverage your grandfather bought-all policies are different. If he only has a supplemental policy to medicare, there probably is not coverage for nursing home coverage. The reason is that medicare does not cover "custodial" care.

Nursing home coverage is usually covered under a long term care policy and then only if he meets the requirements for "skilled care" requiring some type of therapy or medical care that is given by a nurse.

What do you think of AARP as a secondary insurance verses United American?

Will is correct. United American would be the last policy that I'd get. I hear too many things. AARP is sold through United Health and they are much better than United American.

However, that being said there are many plans that I'd have over AARP. Most people are better off with the Medicare Advantage plans instead of a Med Sup. Many of those plans also include the Part D coverage so you don't need a stand alone prescription plan. Also the premium for those plans average around $27 per month in my area, and many have a $0 premium. It can get very confusing. You'd do yourself a favor visiting an independent agent that works with most if not all plans to find the best one for you. The plans and premiums are the same whether you use the agent or buy directly from an insurance company.

How are AARP Insurance rates?

Usually they are higher. AARP isn't an insurer. They are an insurance marketing company so they just add additional expense to the policy.

The auto insurance AARP sells is through the Hartford Company. Check quotes with an independent agent for Hartford (cutting out AARP) and have him also compare it to the other companies available.

Hartford is not usually one of the lowest priced.

Resolved Question: If AARP uses United Health Care for the health insurance would it be cheaper if you got the insuranc…

Thanks for BA, even if by default. By regular insurance, I meant I just had the health insurance, no additions of extra drug benefits, etc.. I went off of it in March because I turned 65 and was able to go one Medicare. Email me if you have questions. I know it is frustrating!

Where can I find an AARP person to talk to about health Insurance?

AARP uses United Health as the underwriter for their policies. United Health is one of the better companies and is also known as Golden Rule for individuals (my personal policy is with Golden Rule). However, there are some differences between the AARP policy and the Golden Rule policies which makes the Golden Rule policy better. Also, the premium on the Golden Rule policy is usually slightly less that with the AARP policy.

You'll need to contact a local independent agent who deals with Golden Rule and they can help you. They can also look at some other companies to try to get you a better deal and can also suggest other ways to lower your premium. Depending upon your situation Golden Rule may not be best for you. If you go through an independent agent you also have someone to help you if there are any problems getting you on a policy and also while you're on the policy. If you go directly through AARP you have an 800 number for assistance but you never talk to the same person twice, which as you know can be frustrating.

Do not under any circumstances cancel your current insurance until you are accepted by another plan.

The Hartford.

My hubby and I have our insurance through them (we are not of retirement age) We have gotten prices from other companies but we haven't found cheaper premiums and we had one claim and they were very helpful.

Resolved Question: how good is AARP Insurance?

AARP isn't an insurance company. They are a marketing company for several insurance company.

On any health products they are usually overpriced BUT they are guaranteed issue. If you qualify for insurance elsewhere you would usually do better going elsewhere but if you are uninsurable then AARP would be an OK option.

Their life insurance is a really really bad deal. Especially the term version. The payment starts out real low but almost doubles every five years until it is outrageously high. Then if you live to age 80 it ends and you've lost all your money. It's a real bad deal.
